“Kom ons braai” (translation “Let’s barbecue”)
A warm, social invitation used in South Africa to gather friends and family around an open fire for food, drinks, and conversation.
A braai (say: ‘bry’ as in dry) is an integral part of South African culture, centered on cooking meat over wood or charcoal fires, rather than a standard gas grill.

Yesterday was Heritage Day in South Africa, informally known as ‘Braai Day’ (barbecue day).
Thousands of determined South Africans tried to set a record for people grilling simultaneously. The current record number of 2,220 was set in Japan’s Ishigaki City in 2023. (For the attempt, Ishigaki beef skewers were prepared for the participants. Ishigaki beef is the signature brand of meat of the city.)
As of Friday night, Guinness World Records has not indicated if yesterday’s attempt to set a new record was indeed successful.
